Smoking during pregnancy is one of those drugs sources that proves to be fatal.
Cigarette smoke contains some toxic chemicals that cause cancer. When you smoke during pregnancy, that chemicals reach your blood cells, hence, your baby get expose to those toxins.
Major effects of Smoking during Pregnancy
Cigarette smoking is also very prevalent in society. Smoking is one of the common drug inhalation causes radiation exposure to both mother and fetus.
Smoking during pregnancy lower the level of oxygen in your body, hence less amount of oxygen available to your baby. Your baby’s heart rate increases. There is increase chances of reparatory problems like asthma etc to your baby.
The major effects of smoking during pregnancy are
- Growth restriction
- Increased miscarriage rate
- IUGR ( Intra Uterine Growth Retardation )
- Still Birth
- Perinatal mortality.
- Premature birth rate increases.
- Congenital anomalies.
Research has shown that Smoking is the most important cause of IUGR. It’s observed a gradual decrease in fetal weight in women’s with increased cigarette consumption. Estimated of 5% fetal weight decreases on per pack consumption per day.
Women who smoked their reproductive rate dropped by 50%. Asthma has been reported in both prenatal and postnatal smoking.
How can I quit Smoking During Pregnancy?
Despite increased public awareness of the dangers of smoking on cigarettes package, smoking still persists and even increases. It’s observed that women have more difficulty quitting smoking compared to men.
Supportive counselling should be done. Questioning and awareness should be frank and supportive. Ill hazard of smoking during pregnancy on both mother and fetus should be clearly explained and motivation to quit smoking.
Do mediation, Stay active. Use mouth fresheners when you feel the urge to smoke.Read a book, start a new hobby. Be strong and determined and Trust yourself that you can do it.
